The Not So Sweet Season

I know it’s not polite to brag about yourself, but I’m feeling pretty accomplished. This holiday season (so far) Randy and I have managed to completely avoid everything in the category of Christmas cookies and candy. We didn’t set out to do that, but I am beyond grateful that it happened “organically.” Last year, the holidays were so full of sugar and sweets that it took me months to recover. In fact, my post about Christmas last year was titled, The Eating Season.

This year I did think about making cookies to give to the neighbors but I never did get around to it. And blessedly, my neighbors didn’t bring any cookies over to us. When we went to my sister’s for Christmas Eve and Day, she didn’t have any holiday sweets. Dessert was key lime pie (her husband’s favorite) and those little 1 inch by 1 inch cheesecake bites from Costco. They were the perfect (small) desserts for a wonderful steak and scallops meal that didn’t keep us wanting to go back for sugar over and over again just because “’tis the season.”

It’s been about 2 weeks since I mindlessly ate sugary stuff (or fake sugary stuff like diet soda) as a routine part of my daily food intake. The first 4 days or so were hard. I am addicted to sugar and diet soda and craved it all the time. Just going near a store triggers that craving. It took every ounce of willpower (someday I’ll have to look up why willpower is measured in ounces) to get out of there without buying a Diet Mt Dew, donuts or cookies. But thank goodness, I’m past that intense desire for something (anything!) sweet. I was amazed the other day at Walmart that I didn’t have to fight with myself just to not buy a soda.

Part of my motivation is reading a new book called The Unholy Trinity. More on that in future posts. For now, I’m marching toward the new beginnings of the new year. I feel like I have a head start. And that feels pretty dang good.
