We were blessed again. After spending 3 years on Guam, 1 before I enlisted and 2 after I came back as a member of the Air Force, we both got orders to McClellan AFB, California. We were happy that the Air Force saw fit to station us together for our next tours of duty. They do try, but it’s never a sure thing until you have orders in hand.
McClellan is in the northern area of Sacramento, California. The location is wonderful, just a few hours to San Franciso, the Napa Valley wine country, Reno, Lake Tahoe, and a host of other interesting places on the West Coast. It was 1982, year of the 16% mortgage rates (can you even imagine that today?). Regardless, Randy and I bought a 1,200 square foot, zero lot line house, new construction, in a development in North Highlands, California.
I reported for duty in the Orderly Room of the 2951st CLSS (Combat Logistics Support Squadron). It was a kinda, sorta elite unit (because for some reason we got to wear airforce blue fatigues) whose main mission was Aircraft Battle Damage Repair. Randy went back to the flight line and became the Atmospheric Research Equipment Repair shop chief.
We ended up being at McClellan for 12 years, until Randy retired. I was only in the Air Force another 2 years, but what fun and great memories we have of our time in the northern California area. I’ll tell you about those last 2 years I was in the Air Force in my post on Tuesday.
