I’m not gonna lie. Moving from a place you’ve lived in for 13 years is a hell of a lot of work. And when you’re going to be 91 in a few weeks, it’s completely overwhelming and discombobulating. The good news for my mom is that she has 6 kids, 5 of whom are willing to help her. Add in the 2 willing spouses and there’s enough help, between us, to get the job done.
That doesn’t mean it’s easy though. Especially since all 7 of us, except for my brother’s wife, are 60 and older. The good news is that Randy and I came early and got started. Mom’s been a trouper, but there’s a lot of resting involved for all of us. With 2 weeks before the actual move we had plenty of time to work and rest. Mom’s new apartment is about half the size of the one she currently lives in so culling and sorting is key. And then there’s all the rigamarole with address changes and utility changes, disposing of the things you can’t take, and coordinating the timing of the move out and move it.
Take my advice, if you’re over 60 and think you’re going to move anytime in the next 5 years, start planning and sorting now. You’ll save yourself a lot of sore muscles and high anxiety.
In the meantime, I’m taking a break for a couple of weeks from writing this blog. No matter how much work it is, what I’m doing now is far more important that meeting a self-imposed blog deadline twice a week.
I’ll be back in June.
