I woke up this morning groggy and sluggish. At least I slept, a little.
As we age, good restful sleep seems harder and harder to achieve. And as we age we need good restful sleep more than ever. Good quality sleep boosts the immune system, enhancing our body’s ability to repair and heal, improves our mood and cognitive function, increases our energy level and improves our heart health. I attend meetings of a group called Healing Strong and picked up some interesting and unusual tips about how to both fall asleep and stay asleep better. I’ve tried many of the things suggested and right now castor oil in my belly button and aromatherapy seem to do the most good.
But whether or not I have a good night is still pretty hit and miss. Last night the whole sleep thing was disrupted by some rude folks in one of the vacation rentals across the canal playing music (Randy says it was Black Sabbath) so loud that the bassline of the music was pounding inside our all-closed-up-behind-thick-(thick!)-hurricane-impact-windows house. Randy called the cops just before 11 pm and the music stopped shortly after that. But that set the tone for a difficult night for me. And I didn’t have the energy to put on my walking shoes and get out there and walk before the day turned into a bright and sunny furnace.
What do you do to help increase the quality of your sleep? Any secrets to share?
