A Bloody Mess

I went to lunch yesterday with my Airplane Girls. We had a great time, as always.

Randy was at home working, by himself, on some of the “behind the drywall” modifications for the guest bath tub to walk-in shower conversion project we started this week. I knew things didn’t go well when I saw him walk toward me with his arm covered in sanitary napkins and painters tape. My heart skipped a beat.

Randy, who has two stents in his widow maker artery, is on a blood thinner. For a handy guy who can fix just about anything, but is aging a bit, and doesn’t have 100% infallibility, the risks are constantly increasing. He’d stepped off the step stool in the cramped shower stall space, twisted his foot a bit, and crashed into the mess of tools and debris littering the small guest bathroom. The skin on his arm torn like tissue paper, and being alone, he couldn’t deal with all of the damage by himself and make it look like it was no big deal.

Any time Randy bleeds these days (which, sadly, is pretty dang often), it’s a big deal. That’s why we keep a good supply of Bleed Cease handy. When I got home, we unwrapped his patch job, pulled out the drawer we keep specifically for bloody emergencies, and dealt with it. I’m a bit squeamish, especially when it’s Randy who’s hurt, but we applied all the emergency coagulant and determined that because of the extent of the open wounds, a sanitary napkin was, in fact, the most efficient covering. Any why not painter’s tape to complete the job? Why not? It’s a lot cheaper and doesn’t stick as fast to arm hair as medical tape.

At least he didn’t run a table saw through his thumb like a friend of ours did recently. Ugh. My stomach is in knots just thinking about that.

Oh no! So sorry to hear he injured himself while we were having fun. Blood thinners are definitely the curse that comes with heart problems-even those that are life savers! Give him my best and look forward to next time.
