I drove past a quaint little adult beverage establishment in Englewood a few months ago.
The bar, called Will’s Honkytonk, had a slogan on their sign that I loved and has stuck with me. It says “A shady place for sunny people.” Clever and delightful. We learned that Will’s is a well known and bustling biker bar.
At the library this week I picked up a featured book called Oh! Florida by Craig Pittman. It’s funny, informative, intriguing, and at times, jaw dropping. In a chapter titled “Getting Stucco” about scammers , con artists, scoundrels, and crooked real estate flimflammers, Pittman used the phrase “A sunny place for shady people.”
Turns out that’s a quote attributed to W. Somerset Maugham referencing the French Riviera where he lived for 4 decades. Regardless, I love the quote and in many regards, it makes me think that some of the shady people in this sunny place are peeps I’d like to meet someday. It would be really engaging and add some spice to our relatively quiet retirement life. Good thing I have a high BS detector, though.
I highly recommend the book I mentioned above. I haven’t finished it yet, but I’ve been walking around smiling since I started it. A fun read and incredibly entertaining. I’m glad I didn’t read it before we moved here though. I’m starting to think a tiny bit about returning to Missouri.
