Have you ever noticed that service in a restaurant is really lousy when the restaurant isn’t very busy? Randy and I think this is almost universally true. It’s interesting to us because it’s counterintuitive.
You’d think that when servers aren’t busy they’d give you more, not less, of their attention. But it seems that when the restaurant is bustling, all the servers are really hustling. They know they need to keep working to keep up. But when they only have one or two tables, apparently they think of that as their break time. They check their phones, catch up with the gossip from the other servers who aren’t very busy, take breaks, and gosh knows what else. As a result, their customers are no longer the most important thing to them and it shows. We’ve often had to go looking for a server to get a beverage refill, or to ask for our check. It’s frustrating.
Alas, I kind of got caught up in that trap myself this month, working for the one sales accounting client I still have left. Their store is closed in January and February and so there’s not much to do. But I still have to reconcile the bank accounts and fill out sales reports. I procrastinated and procrastinated this month, effectively giving them the exact crappy service I complained about above.
Guilty. Busted. Sorry. I’m going to do better….I promise.
