In case you didn’t know, the Geminid Meteor Showers peak tonight. Nice of them to show up to help us celebrate the first day of our 50th Anniversary year!

The Geminid is considered one of the best and most reliable meteor showers of the year. Randy went out last night looking for them and said the moon was so bright that tonight will probably be a challenge to the best viewing. Still, we’re going to put on our arctic gear (it’s been down in the mid-40s overnight and that’s FREEZING once you’re Florida acclimated), stretch out on our pool chaise lounges, and go look anyway. NASA says that though moonlight may cut viewing by about 50%, the Geminid showers at their peak can yield up to 120 meteors per hour. That seems worth it.

Here’s a little Facebook video about the meteor shower this year. Best viewing is in the hours just before dawn. The experts say you should lie on your back with your feet pointed south and give your eyes a half hour to adjust. Enjoy!
