consider myself a pretty smart cookie. But I got served a big helping of humility yesterday.

Thankfully it was one of those bad news/good news things and I came out on the sunny side of a very stormy week, relearning a lesson I already knew, but obviously forgot to apply.

Last week I picked up and glanced at the pathology report from my doctor. I saw something that caused me to immediately jump to the conclusion I have a relatively rare, aggressive and hard to treat strain of breast cancer. All week long I researched and planned and started making decisions about how to move forward. I was as stressed as I ever get.

Yesterday morning, waiting for my oncology appointment, I looked at the pathology report again, slower and more carefully. Stunningly I realized I’d completely misread it, looking at symbols rather than words. I felt like I won the lottery.

I jumped to an erroneous conclusion, assuming something that wasn’t anywhere near true. You know what they say about assume(ing)…it makes an ASS out of U and ME. I don’t know about you, but it certainly made an ASS out of ME

Thank goodness it was bad news to good news rather than the other way around. Periodic reminders to be careful about that conclusion jumping thing in the future is something we can all use.
